Healthcare means medical care for any kind of health issue, day-to-day medical problem, or disease. In our country, healthcare is divided into three categories:
1. PRIMARY CARE
Primary care means the first point of contact with a healthcare worker or doctor. At this stage, the doctor you consult is known as a General Physician or Family Physician.
2. SECONDARY CARE
When a patient requires specialised care that cannot be provided by a general physician, the patient is referred to a specialist doctor.
3. TERTIARY CARE
When OPD treatment under a specialist doctor is not possible, the patient is advised to be admitted to a hospital.
GENERAL PHYSICIAN
A general physician is a doctor who is the first point of contact for day-to-day medical problems. They evaluate initial symptoms, provide treatment for common infections and illnesses such as respiratory infections and stomach problems, and manage long-term lifestyle diseases such as diabetes (sugar), hypertension (blood pressure), headaches, back pain, etc. They also provide referrals in advanced cases.
They perform the following essential roles in everyday Indian healthcare:
1. Diagnosis of Common Health Problems
They diagnose common health problems such as the common cold, respiratory problems, and gastrointestinal problems. They also order investigations if required.
2. Chronic Disease Management
They manage chronic health conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes, joint pain, back pain, and headaches.
3. Preventive Healthcare
They focus on preventing future health complications through health check-ups, advising necessary laboratory tests, and offering lifestyle counselling. They also help with weight management through healthy diet advice and lifestyle changes.
4. Coordinated Healthcare
Rather than focusing on a single organ, they take a holistic view of your health and, when necessary, coordinate treatment by referring you to the concerned specialist.
